Why It’s Important To Design a Business You Love

Welcome to the Design a Business You Love Blog & Podcast

Welcome to the Design a Biz You Love blog and podcast, where we delve into strategies for creating a business that brings joy and fulfillment. I’m your host, Kimberly Love, and today I’m excited to share some insights from my beach cottage. You may know me as Kimberly Design Love, a nickname I earned through my passion for design. With years of experience in the design industry, I’ve now dedicated my time to helping others design lives they truly love. Recently, I even achieved my lifelong dream of living by the beach. In this episode, we’ll explore the importance of designing a business you love and delve into the five key traits of a lifestyle business that allows you to work from anywhere.

Why Designing a Business You Love Matters

Imagine yourself sipping margaritas on a tropical beach, all while running a business that fills your heart with joy. Sounds incredible, right? That’s what designing a lifestyle business is all about. It’s not about counting down the days until retirement or working endlessly. It’s about creating a business that aligns with your passions and grants you the freedom to live life on your own terms.

The Five Traits of a Lifestyle Business

  1. Flexibility: A lifestyle business offers the freedom to work from any location and at any time. You’re not tied down to a specific place or schedule, giving you the opportunity to travel and embrace life on your own terms.
  2. Scalability: With a lifestyle business, you can scale your income and work with a team. It’s not a matter of trading time for money; instead, you have the potential to earn more while working less.
  3. Fulfillment: A lifestyle business enables you to pursue work that you’re passionate about and that aligns with your values. It’s not just about earning a paycheck; it’s about making a positive impact on the world.
  4. Sustainability: A lifestyle business is designed for the long haul. It’s not a get-rich-quick scheme but rather a venture that can withstand the test of time. Moreover, it can be passed down to future generations. Additionally, many lifestyle businesses have a positive or neutral impact on the environment.
  5. Enjoyment: Above all, a lifestyle business allows you to have fun and relish the journey. It’s not solely focused on the end goal; instead, you enjoy every step along the way.

Designing Your Ideal Lifestyle Business

So, how can you go about designing a lifestyle business that embodies these traits? It begins with identifying your passions and skills that can be transformed into a viable business. From there, you can create a plan that enables you to work from anywhere and grow your income.

Semi-Retirement and Time Freedom

One of the advantages of a lifestyle business is the possibility of semi-retirement. As your business grows, you can structure it to require less of your time, allowing you to take extended breaks and truly enjoy life. Just envision being able to embark on a month-long vacation without worrying about your business falling apart. That’s the beauty of a well-designed lifestyle business.

Exercise: Dreaming of Your Ideal Business and Ideal Day

Before we wrap up, I have an exercise for you. Take a few moments to imagine your ideal business and what your perfect day would look like. If possible, jot down your thoughts and feelings in a journal or a note-taking app like Evernote. Alternatively, if you’re on the move, visualize it mentally and write it down later.

Reflect on the following questions as you embark on this exercise:

  1. What does your ideal business look like?
  2. What products or services does it offer?
  3. How does your business make a positive impact?
  4. Who are your ideal customers or clients?
  5. What tasks and activities do you engage in daily within your business?
  6. How much income do you generate from your business?
  7. How much time do you dedicate to working on your business?
  8. What kind of support system do you have in place for your business?
  9. Where do you envision yourself working from?
  10. Describe your ideal workday.
  11. What activities do you engage in on your ideal workday?
  12. Describe your ideal day off.
  13. What activities do you enjoy on your ideal play day?

As you document your thoughts, don’t hesitate to dream big and let your imagination soar. For now, practicalities and feasibility take a backseat. The goal is to paint a vivid picture of your ideal business and ideal day.
